Institutional Projects
Limpopo Central Hospital
Client: Local Government
As freelance Landscape Architect I was tasked by Newtown Landscape Architects with the concept development for the Limpopo Central Hospital landscape, South Africa.
Our scope of works included both the soft and hard landscaping for the hospital. The entrance plaza was the main landscape feature, and a lot of attention was given to the internal courtyards and how these relate to the function of the building.
Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls
Client: Oprah Winfrey Foundation
As employee of Bapela Cave Klapwijk and associates, we were selected as the landscape architects for the design and implementation of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls landscape in Henley-On-Klip, South Africa.
The landscape design required that landscape design principles be established early during the planning and design process. These principles were established due to the environmental constraints of the site that limited the possible options. The principal constraints were dolomitic conditions and the Highveld climate.
The landscape design guidelines for the Academy were:
Plant palette to be based on drought resistant plants to reduce water requirements in dolomitic conditions.
Plant selection from both indigenous and exotic species.
Veld grasses to be used extensively on periphery of property.
Plants to be cold tolerant and to provide seasonal colour changes.
Trees to provide an African ambience such as the flat crown of the Acacias.
Siloam Hospital

As freelance Landscape Architect I was tasked by Newtown Landscape Architects with the concept development for the Siloam Hospital landscape in Northern Limpopo, South Africa.
Our scope of works included both the soft and hard landscaping for the hospital. The entrance plaza was the main landscape feature, and a lot of attention was given to the internal courtyards and how these relate to the function of the building.
USAID
Client: USAID
As employee of Bapela Cave Klapwijk and associates, we were selected as the landscape architects for the design and implementation of the USAID landscape in Pretoria, South Africa.
The client required an aesthetical pleasing and practical landscape design. Due to the function of the building, security was a concern, and a lot of attention and detail went into the design of the landscape. Low level shrubs and groundcovers were used around buildings and tree species were carefully selected and positioned to not cause a security risk. All plant species used is indigenous except for the indoor courtyards.
Another requirement of the client was to achieve a 5-star GreenStar rating. We could contribute towards this requirement with the design and commissioning process of the irrigation system. The irrigation system was designed with the latest Pipe Network Simulation Software and had to be commissioned and installed to a specified standard. Other elements of the irrigation system included a central control system, wind and moisture sensors, drip lines and high-end leak detection systems.
Skilpadshek Border Post
Client: Department of Public Works
As employee of Bapela Cave Klapwijk and associates, we were selected as the landscape architects for the design and implementation of the Skilpadshek Border Post landscape in the North West Province, South Africa.
The focus of the conceptual design was the entries and traffic circles. Trees planted on either side of the main routes created a boulevard effect. Next to the footpaths and along all major routes, lawn was introduced. To assist in climate control, trees were placed in parking areas wherever possible.
Planting around the Operational Buildings consisted mainly of shade trees, lawns, and hardy groundcovers to allow for visibility throughout, yet unifying the area. Existing Aloe's from the areas disturbed on site, were transplanted to the intensive landscaped area's around these buildings.
Rehabilitation of the Aloe conservation zone consisted mainly of clearing undergrowth and hydroseeding the disturbed areas without disturbing the Aloe community.
